Our city, our families and our culture are under attack as never before. Not surprisingly, our pastors are on the front lines of this warfare. Because of their great responsibility and accountability, they face greater pressure.

Dr. Will Bruce put it this way: “Pastors need prayer, too. No matter how well you pay your pastor, praise him or work for him, it is through your earnest, strategic prayer that you can ever help him be an effective minister in the hands of Almighty God.”

Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and [that] your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. John 15:16

Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. Matthew 18:19

The LORD is far from the wicked but he hears the prayer of the righteous. Proverbs 15:29

With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints. Ephesians 6:18

When should you pray for Your Pastor?

Fighting the Good Fight of Faith

The need is continually there, so pray during your CPN times, as well as Sunday services, prayer meetings, children's church class sessions and youth meetings. Pray in times and seasons when you are aware of particular needs.

What Should You Pray for Your Pastor?

As an active church member, you might be aware of the special needs of your pastor and his family. Beyond these needs, the Scripture provides specific areas in which to pray:

  • Inspiration and Anointing - Pray that God will give your pastor the anointing to make his words come alive and change lives in your congregation and, ultimately, our city. (Col 1:24 and 4:3,4)
  • Protection - Consider the greatness of God on behalf of your pastor (Rom. 8:23, 31, 37 and I Peter 3:12). Believe the promises for this overall protection (Isaiah 54:14-17, Psalm 34:7, Luke 10:19 and II Chron. 10:3, 4). Ask God to grant them a discerning spirit (II Cor. 11:14 and I John 4:1).
  • Fight the Good Fight of Faith - Pray believing that your prayers will be answered, and be open to other prayer needs that the Holy Spirit may reveal to you.
  • Preserving Life - Ask God to honor your pastor with lasting fruit (Malachi 3:11 and John 15:16). Give thanks for your pastor's call and ministry (Col. 1:3-5).

  • Personal Life-  Pray that your Pastors seek first to bring honor to God in all that they do. (2 Cor 6:3-4; Rom 13:7). Pray for their continual renewal. (2 Cor 4:16). Pray for holiness. (Rom 12:1-2). Pray that they will have Godly contentment (I Tim. 6:6); and for the love of God to fill their heart (Deut 30:6).
  • Family Life - Intercede for their spouse, children and extended family (Psalm 37:25 and 91:9-12). Ask God to protect them from the attacks of the enemy. (Matt: 16:19). Pray against all obstacles to health and prosperity (Mark 11:23 and Phil. 4:19).
  • Prayer Life - Pray that God would fill them with faith.(Mark 6:6). Pray that there be no distractions during their devotional time (Mark 1:36). As the Father to give your pastor a strong worship life. (Matt: 4:10).
  • Preaching Life - Ask that God bless your pastor with rich study time (Acts 6:4 and II Tim. 2:15).
